Friday Harbor is a small town on a small island 80 miles north from Seattle in Washington state. There are no major shopping centers, chain restaurants, or bridges to the mainland. Friday Harbor has a decent size preschool, elementary school, high school, and community college. The Spring Street School is a private school also located in downtown Friday Harbor.

Friday Harbor has a fabulous library located on the edge of town, a well-equipped fitness
center, a medical center, a courthouse, police station, and a fire station. More

Kings is a large grocery store located in the heart of town with an extensive
wine collection, deli, and produce section. Just a couple blocks from Kings is
another larger grocery store with lower prices and a monstrous parking lot. A
local farmer's market opens every Saturday in the courthouse parking lot during
the warmer months.
Tourism, construction, local government, and real estate are the biggest
employers however many choose the San Juan Islands as a great place to

The Washington State Ferry lands directly in Friday Harbor and travels between
the other islands, Sydney British Columbia and mainland United States. The ferry
ride to the mainland is approximately 1 hour.

Harbor locals make frequent trips to the mainland for various reasons such as
shopping, going skiing on Mount Baker, watching their children's sports games at
nearby schools, picking up family from SeaTac International Airport, or going to
a Seattle Seahawks football game.
While Seattle has a reputation for being rainy the San Juan Islands have a
reputation for great weather year-round. Don't get me wrong late November,
December, January, and February can be very gray and dreary. During this period
many locals choose to spend their weekends on the slopes of nearby ski areas
such as Mount Baker, Snoqualmie, or Whistler British Columbia.
Friday Harbor is home to The Port of Friday Harbor Marina as well as a small
airport with several flights daily to Seattle, Bellingham, and Vancouver Island.
Jensen Bay Shipyard is a mile or so south of Friday Harbor, Snug Harbor is
located on the northwest side of San Juan Island, and
Roche Harbor Marina and
Village lies to the northwest of that.
Boat
owners can also keep their boats in front of their waterfront homes if they have
a deep water dock.
Live music can be enjoyed midweek and on the weekends at local bars and
restaurants. Friday Harbor is home to restaurants specializing in seafood,
Chinese, Thai, Mediterranean, Italian, Mexican, and more.
During the summers locals enjoy walking their dogs on Jackson or South Beach,
watching the whales go by from whale watch Park, hiking over Mount Finlayson,
swimming at Eagle Cove, skating the local skate park, bird watching, acting in
local plays, fishing for salmon, catching Dungeness crabs, hiking up Mount
Young, visiting the annual fair, painting landscapes and seascapes, finding
private anchorages and sailing around the islands.

Harbor and the rest of the San Juan Islands are popular among second home buyers
and wealthy retirees. Many that try living in the San Juan Islands will find it
is a place that gets under your skin and latches on to you. Many of those who
move away eventually moved back to relive their San Juan memories and the
relative high quality of life.
